Psychotherapy and Counselling In Brighton and Hove Steffi Bednarek   MA   BA   MBACP

Welcome to my website ... please note that in response to the current times, all sessions have now moved on-line for a while. I am happy to discuss how to make this work for you....

I am a senior accredited psychotherapist and supervisor, trained in clinical Gestalt Psychotherapy, Somatic Trauma Therapy, Bereavement Counselling, Group work, CBT and nature based, soul-centric work. I have worked with clients for over 16 years: in the NHS, in Higher Education and in private practice.

As a manager I headed up psychotherapeutic services for adults, children and young people in Brighton, was Head of Counselling and Mental Health within the Higher Education sector and worked as a trainer and consultant on mental health issues for the World Health Organisation, the Council of Europe,  the Ministry of Education in Luxembourg and large international charities.

Whilst I continue to work as a consultant and trainer, my main focus is my private practice as well as group work that supports individuals, professionals and communities to respond soulfully to the climate crisis.

I have been awarded senior accredited status by the BACP and have published for the BACP, the British Gestalt Journal and other academic and non academic journals, nationally and internationally.

If you are visiting this page because you feel stuck, down, anxious or distressed, you are not alone. There is no possibility of creating a life that doesn’t have change, loss and heartbreak in it. The reality is that in our shared human experience we all encounter times of distress. Sometimes friends and family can offer support in difficult times and sometimes we may nevertheless choose to look at underlying patterns with a qualified therapist. It does not need to be an either-or-decision; you can choose both.

We work together to identify what is needed to bring movement into a seemingly stuck situation and to find a way of integrating new behaviours into a more conscious and choiceful way of being. Together, we explore stuck patterns and their negative impact on your life and your relationships. Once you have become more aware of them and understand how you may actively maintain them, you can start to experiment with change. From a place of greater awareness you can then be playful, gently stretch your comfort zone and experiment with different behaviour. It is usually at that point that clients see real change in their lives, their relationships and their environment.  I will support you in finding a way to integrate this new way of being.

I have witnessed many times what a profound difference this way of working can make to peoples' lives. That is why I am deeply passionate about my work.

I work in private practice in Hove and see clients on a short- and long-term basis, depending on their need. I work with complex long standing issues as well as situations that have just arisen. I offer on-line work for international clients.

In addition to the general 4 year psychotherapy training, I also did substantial training in somatic trauma therapy (2 years) , grief and bereavement work (2 years), embodied and creative interventions (1 year), CBT (1 year) and nature based work (2 years). I therefore have specialist knowledge and training in several different approaches, which enables me to use what best suits the issues you bring, rather than asking you to fit one approach.

I extend particular thanks to some mentors and trainers that have irreversibly shaped my way of seeing the world:

My mentor and teacher Francis Weller and his beautiful way of honouring the human soul, the soul of the world and the place of grief and ritual in our lives
My main Gestalt Therapy mentors Malcolm Parlett and Peter Philippson
Babette Rothchild and Janina Fisher for their training in trauma therapy
The Animas Valley Institute for soul centric earth based nature connection
Clarissa Pinkola Estes for her teachings and her guidance on finding one’s ‘original voice’

My training and experience as a Psychotherapist have allowed me to work with clients who come with a wide range of issues, such as:

Whatever you come with, my aim is to work together to transform fixed patterns, so that you can live a fuller and more satisfying life.

“I can’t believe how long I have waited to start Counselling. Now that I come to the end of it, I can say that it was one of the most important things I have done in my life, apart from getting married and having children of course!”

‘I am so glad I found your website. I can’t thank you enough for the change that has occurred in me’

‘It is a long road, but I feel I have my life back on track'

'Who would have thought that it was going to be so much easier than expected?'
